Kelong experience at Kelong Kawal

Yesterday morning, me & a group of our present & ex-colleagues set off at Sin time, 9.30am for 2 hours ferry to Tanjung Pinang, Batam for a 2D1N stay at a local Kelong Kawal, which is about 40min ride from the jetty. It was pretty a small group as compared to the previous trips where our group size is about 80plus... This round, we have 31 people (including children) went for this trip. We reached Tanjung Pinang jetty at about 10.30am (btw, their timing is 1 hour slower than our timing) - Find it weird though... =P We quickly took the chartered vehicles to bring us to the Kelong... Some of us who are more adventurous took the slow walk to the Kelong via the slits leading to the Kelong while the rest of us decided to take the 5-10mins boat ride to the Kelong.

Quickly, we changed to our swimming entire (some of us quite daring wear the bikini)... =) Spend 2hours plus at the Palau Hantu swimming while the rest just enjoy catching up... Me & GL's wife & her daughter went to pick seashells after so boring in the water. Nice picks... Shall take a picture and do something with the seashell soon!!! We met a small incident while coming back, oops. 1 of the engine suddenly drop dead... So Mr Lim (owner of the kelong) had no choice but to travel slowly until the dead engine revived again. When we reached the kelong, the rest who's travelling on another speedboat had arrived. Some of us went back to shower while the rest went for the banana boat ride... heard from them that none of them fell into the water... Not fun, right... Banana boat should be able to flunk you into the water at a fast speed... hehe...

Showered in cold water after we came back from the island as i was super hot... (fyi, the kelong do not install heaters nor air-con sys in their rooms). End up, me & some of us chit-chatted outside their rooms (Note: their rooms facing the open sea but no sea-breeze). =(. Played carrom with GL, his wife & their daughter... Experted sia... first round, me lost until "drop pants"... won no carroms until GLW shared her techniques with me then i started winning those seeds...

Can u imagine sleeping in super hot (like sauna-room) with just a little fan blowing at you? We all end up at the Karaoke room (the only air-con room in the Kelong) & sing until early morning... By the time, all very exhausted & went back to their rooms for the night... except me, my room-mate, jenny & 2 guys got stucked in the K-room until 5plus in the morning... But it was freezing cold... Rested but didnt slept well throughout the night. Those ah Tiongs played mahjong & talked so loudly that those's rooms just outside the recreation area find it very hard to fall asleep until their game finishes at 3am.

2D1N stay in the kelong is quite suffice to experience a kelong stay especially for those who are very used to sleeping in a air-conditioned rooms will find it a torture to sleep even for 1 hour... as kelong is very hot & humid in the daytime & warm at night. Oh, by the way, not just have to bear the heat but also those irritating insects which always hovering over the food.

Overall, the food is pretty decent and quite delicious... But my room-mate said that their standard dropped from the last time they stayed in this kelong... Commented that the portion's smaller & less variety... We had big fishes, osyter, vegtables, chilli prawns, crabs for almost every meals... We even had satay for late supper... while we are K-ing... =) The kelong is undergoing some renovation works right now, & buck of the kelong is supported by concrete structures instead of wooden slits which the owners said need to be changed every few years to prevent collapsed of the kelong due to the weakening of the wooden structures... and it has been expanding over the last few years so the kelong is now much bigger & spacious. Who knows next time when we visit the kelong, there will be sufficient space for badminton court???

We even have time to go to the town to shop some of their local products which you can't find it in Sgp... Bought a carton of instant noodles at a very cheap price... Though you can find it in our supermarkets, the price is more than double of the purchase price.

Anyway, our 2D1N at the kelong is just eat, eat & nothing but eat as we don't really have much programme to keep us entertained and entertain onboard kelong is limited.. It's more like getaway weedend trips for those who brough along their family & the rest who came alone. But it's good opportunity to be able to catch up with soome of my colleagues whom i seldom talked to, esp after our C of our previous Org.

Will upload the pics soon.
